The Quilts of Valor Foundation marked a national milestone in its July 31, 2026 announcement: the 450,000th Quilt of Valor had been awarded to Karee Van Wert White of North Carolina earlier that month. The foundation did not give a precise ceremony date in the written announcement.

The person behind the milestone

The foundation described White as a retired U.S. Army Major and Special Operations Command paratrooper who served three tours in Europe and the United States. It also highlighted her subsequent advocacy, including her selection as a 2018 Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow representing North Carolina and her founding of the I Love Everyone Foundation.

The milestone gives sewing groups a reason to consider the recipient as carefully as the finished object. A project plan can discuss fabric and stitching while also leaving room to ask how a quilt will be presented and what the recipient is comfortable sharing publicly.

Before starting a contribution

If the story makes you interested in participating, ask the foundation or a local group about its current process. Confirm which contributions it accepts, what requirements apply and how a project is coordinated. The award announcement is not a substitute for current donation or participation instructions.

For a group project, agree on responsibilities before committing materials. Who will make the top, arrange quilting and finish the binding? Who will check the current requirements and communicate with the receiving organization? Set a realistic completion plan around the help actually available.

If you need to build your construction skills first, our beginner quilting guide can help you plan a practice project. Keep that learning project separate from a promised donation until you have confirmed the recipient organization's expectations.
